Quality has always been at the heart of the company’s mission: ISO:9001 certified since 2010, under the new company management, Roen Est has started a process and internal organization review process that also integrates safety and environmental protection. At the end of 2014, Roen adopted a new organisational model and a new code of ethics in compliance with Italian Legislative Decree 231/2001. In 2015, this system was further expanded to comply with the new European ISO sustainability standards with a clear long-term vision to address the company’s complexity to make it simpler and more efficient by managing all quality aspects in a coordinated way: production, safety at work and eco-sustainability. The result is a single integrated management system in compliance with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, BS OHSAS 18001:2007, which controls all aspects of quality, safety and the environment to facilitate internal functions and processes, involving all areas and levels of the company. ALESSIA REDUCE has been working in Roen Est since 2011 and is responsible for Quality System Management.
How has your role changed in the company in recent years?
I am a chemist and in my previous professional experience I dealt with Research & Development, especially in the metalworking sector. At Roen, I have held different positions: I started in the design office in the technical dept., then I moved on to the R&D department and in 2014 to the Quality System of which I am in charge. Since 2015, quality, safety and the environment have been managed in an integrated way according to a precise corporate vision whose objective is to be a solution provider for our customers and not just a supplier.
What are you dealing with specifically in terms of Quality?
We work based on the fundamental assumption that everyone in the company can contribute to quality, each according to their own role and that the proactive involvement of human resources is essential. The focus is always on customers and their needs: we monitor every problem or critical issue to give answers in the shortest possible time, analyse and optimise processes to minimise the risk of complaints, develop custom solutions and work upstream of production. It all starts from fostering internal skills, at every company and job level: all personnel are constantly trained with a view to continuous improvement to provide better products and services.
So, internal quality is addressed externally in an effective organizational system.
That’s right. There is a great deal of work in the company, but also a daily commitment alongside customers for the continuous improvement of our performance: companies send us audits during the year to analyse performance and always be up to par with their requirements. To be a partner. It’s the same with suppliers: it is a two-way collaboration relationship to always keep the supply chain under control and above all the relationships that ensure quality, efficiency, timeliness, and flexibility. Integrated Quality, Safety and Environmental management also means monitoring the supply chain to provide safe products with minimum environmental impact, working together with customers and suppliers.
Is it the right way forward for future development?
No doubt at all. Quality as a company system is the key to competitiveness. In this respect, we are also investing heavily in internal and external communication. Always fast, clear and comprehensive information to customers (also through the dedicated company Intranet) and monthly meetings dedicated to quality and safety to share new projects with staff: therefore, training as well as internal sharing.
CRISITINA ODDO has been working at Roen Est since May 2017. She is the H&S Officer for Safety and Environmental Systems Management, a field she has been specialised in since 1997.
How has this first period at the company been?
Intense and positive, and focused on company objectives. I immediately concentrated on the development of the management system and this effort resulted with great satisfaction in certification last October.
What does the word “environment” mean in an integrated quality system?
Working at best in terms of quality cannot fail to include environmental protection, especially for a company like ours that has a strong focus on safeguarding the context in which it operates. This objective influences and guides the organisation, processes and internal training courses within the various company areas.
How are you working for safety?
The constant reduction of the risk of accidents and the protection of workers’ health is the company’s first and foremost objective: making personnel work safely means obviously training, but also optimisation of the production site by reducing repetitive movements, managing at best the risks linked to high pressures, controlling every stage of automation, and investing in machinery and equipment, a path that in recent years has seen the renewal of the machinery and plant with new technology.
What are the next steps?
The objectives that Roen Est has set for itself, through its management, are linked to the continuous improvement of environmental aspects and their impact on the territory where the company is present, thus reducing emissions into the atmosphere, external noise, consumption of water, electricity and methane, and reduction of generated waste. And all this needs to be done by constantly monitoring the internal and external production chain. The main players along this path are all my colleagues, so my focus is their training, awareness and monitoring to make them more and more attentive, aware and able to pursue the mission that the company has assigned us. The 2018 budget is ambitious and will give us the opportunity to make a significant step forward in good waste management, plant engineering, high pressure risk management, ergonomic workstations, protective equipment, and training plans at all levels.
We plan on further reducing plant emissions and analysing the raw materials used to understand which ones have the greatest impact. We constantly monitor the production chain to reduce waste: ecological yards have been created throughout the plant with containers of different colours to correctly sort the types of waste generated by production.
